Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar, it lasts around 29 – 30 days and is based on the visual sighting of the crescent moon. The Holy Month is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is observed by the global Muslim community as the month of fasting to honour and remember the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an given to the Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessing be upon him, by the Archangel Gabriel.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims around the globe abstain from worldly desires, including the consumption of any food or fluids from dawn, when the Fajr prayer enters, until sunset when the Maghreb prayer enters.

Fasting is a practice of temporary disengagement and self-mastery, strengthening one’s resolve against one’s own desires. It is not only abstaining from food and drink, the fast is also a fast of the tongue, such as lying and speaking ill of others, a fast of the mind, sight and actions. During the Holy Month performing good acts is particularly encouraged.
